Why do we pray, serve, and quote scripture — and still feel stuck?
In the newest episode of the FaithFlex Podcast, “Self-Sabotage Exposed: Breaking Free,” Dr. DeWeylla Malone joins host Monica Roxanne for a raw and revelatory conversation on the invisible habits that quietly sabotage our faith, purpose, and progress. This isn’t just another motivational talk. It’s a therapeutic, spirit-led diagnosis of the inner cycles that are harder to see than sin — and often more damaging.
🌱 The Silent Struggle of the Faithful
Many believers experience a spiritual tension between knowing God’s promises and still not walking in freedom. As Monica shares in the episode, “We’re people of faith — we love God. But sometimes we look up and realize we’re the ones blocking our own blessings. And we don’t even know how we got here.”
Dr. Dee gently but firmly unveils why this happens. One word: unawareness.
“A lot of times we don’t know we’re in a cycle. We think we’re on purpose — going to church, reading the Word, fellowshipping with the saints… but we can’t recognize when we’re actually stuck.” — Dr. DeWeylla Malone
🧠 Understanding Self-Sabotage in Spiritual Terms
Self-sabotage isn’t always obvious. It can show up as procrastination, perfectionism, comparison, avoidance, or staying in safe but stagnant places. And what’s worse? In faith communities, we often cover these patterns with scripture or spiritual activity instead of confronting the root cause.
Dr. Dee explains that these cycles are often born from rejection, fear, unprocessed trauma, and a misunderstanding of our emotions. Instead of healing, we hustle. Instead of feeling, we perform. And instead of being honest, we hide behind titles and tasks.
“Deliverance is real — but so is trauma. And if we don’t deal with both, we do more harm than good.”
😶🌫️ The Problem with Emotional Suppression in the Church
One powerful moment in the episode is when Dr. Dee calls out how many in ministry have become emotionally numb:
“I see people in ministry and there’s no expression in them. As if, if they show emotion, something must be wrong. But God gave us emotions. They aren’t evil — they’re informative.”
This conversation pulls back the curtain on a harmful norm: pretending everything is fine when your spirit is drowning. Faith is not the absence of emotion — it’s the presence of truth. And part of that truth is acknowledging when you're not okay.
💔 The Role of Community and Accountability
Another overlooked part of self-sabotage? The lack of accountability. Dr. Dee explains that even in faith-based circles, people hesitate to tell each other the truth. We fear being seen as judgmental, so we say nothing. But silence is not support.
“People would rather spare your feelings than risk offending you with the truth. But that’s not love. That’s fear.”
Breaking cycles requires people around you who can lovingly say, “You’re better than this. Let’s deal with it.”
